The Age in which You Can Rent a Hotel Room
The age limit is 16 in all the states in the union and most states in USA and Canada. Some states are allowed to raise the age limit even higher for certain types of hotels. So if your state gives you an older age for your hotel room, you may be able to do it legally or you may not. Some states have different rules for which types of hotels can have a minimum room age. For example, the state of Idaho is required to provide 24-hour notice for those rooms that rent for more than 24 hours. In other states, like California, there are no minimum rooms age requirement. It depends on how much information is available about each type of hotel.
Some hotels, like the HVAC and plumbing hotels, may require a minimum room age if a certain level of occupancy is required. In those hotels, you may not be able to have an older room if there are not at least two of the following conditions:
- There is less than two hours occupancy at the time of application
- No one is under 18
- There is no alcohol, tobacco or drug impairment at the time of application
- This means that if you’re applying for an older room at The Olde English Inn in New Orleans, you might need an older room at the same hotel where you are staying. If you’re applying for an older room at an upscale hotel in Boston, you might also need an earlier room time because Boston uses more hotel rooms older than 16. In these hotels, the hotel does not charge to increase the minimum age.
The Minimum Room Age in the United States
The minimum age that most states have to raise when it comes to hotel room fees is 16, but some states limit the age to the age of 25 years (18 in California). For example, the state of New Hampshire may not increase the minimum age for any of the rooms in their hotel, except for a guest room of the hotel for a certain amount of time, when you stay for less than 30 nights in any year. Here are some FAQs which pops up when learning how old do you have to be to rent a hotel room:
Can a 17 rent a hotel room if their parents rent the room online but aren’t present at check-in?
No, your parents do not have to be at check in to do this, but if they are there will be a notice.
What are the consequences of paying rent online?
I think if an admin decides to stop the payment, then no-one’s money (not your parents, not your parents’ school) will be paid.
Is it possible to have two or more families rent a hotel room?
Yes, if a parent has two or more kids, all their money can be rented by the kids.
Are there any restrictions on how much money you can rent online and how many times it can be rented?
All that matters is that the parents have agreed.
Why do I feel like it’s okay when my parents rent the room, but my kids don’t?
Some landlords have a clause which states how much the parent should get.
Some parents pay by credit card, credit card and debit card – it’s up to them to decide how to rent.
Is it okay for the parents to cancel a rent agreement for any reason?
No, there’s no clause saying parents can’t cancel an agreement.
Is it okay for my friends to rent my room online?
Sure. Your room may be rented out to your friend for 30 days. If no-one is staying that long, then you can buy a new room for the same amount. The new owner won’t be charged a deposit.
What’s the refund policy?
This depends upon whether the rent was paid for online or through a rental agreement. If you paid for your room online, you don’t receive a money-back guarantee.
How does that differ from a money-back guarantee?
The money-back-guarantee will help you to get your deposit back if you decide that you can no longer pay for your accommodation online.

Hotel room services fees – These fees can be added to a room service rental agreement between you and the host. Please consult your host for more details.
